چکیده

Many recent single-shell high angular resolution diffusion imaging reconstruction techniques have been introduced to reconstruct orientation distribution functions (ODF) that only capture angular information contained in the diffusion process of water molecules. By also considering the radial part of the diffusion signal, the reconstruction of the ensemble average diffusion propagator (EAP) of water molecules can provide much richer information about complex tissue microstructure than the ODF. In this paper, we present diffusion propagator imaging (DPI), a novel technique to reconstruct the EAP from multiple shell acquisitions. The DPI solution is analytical and linear because it is based on a Laplace equation modeling of the diffusion signal. DPI is validated with ex vivo phantoms and also illustrated on an in vivo human brain dataset. DPI is shown to reconstruct EAP from only two b-value shells and approximately 100 diffusion measurements.

Diffusion propagator imaging: a novel technique for reconstructing the diffusion propagator from multiple shell acquisitions

INTRODUCTION: Many recent techniques have been introduced for high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) [1 and references therein], to infer the diffusion or fiber orientation distribution function (ODF) of the underlying tissue structure. These methods, mostly designed for fiber tractography, are normally based on a single shell acquisition and can only recover some angular information...

Bessel Fourier Orientation Reconstruction: An Analytical EAP Reconstruction Using Multiple Shell Acquisitions in Diffusion MRI

The estimation of the ensemble average propagator (EAP) directly from q-space DWI signals is an open problem in diffusion MRI. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is one common technique to compute the EAP directly from the diffusion signal, but it is burdened by the large sampling required. Recently, several analytical EAP reconstruction schemes for multiple q-shell acquisitions have been propose...

Bessel Fourier Orientation Reconstruction (BFOR): An analytical diffusion propagator reconstruction for hybrid diffusion imaging and computation of q-space indices

The ensemble average propagator (EAP) describes the 3D average diffusion process of water molecules, capturing both its radial and angular contents. The EAP can thus provide richer information about complex tissue microstructure properties than the orientation distribution function (ODF), an angular feature of the EAP. Recently, several analytical EAP reconstruction schemes for multiple q-shell...

Diffusion Propagator Imaging (DPI): an alternative to Diffusion Spectrum Imaging (DSI)

INTRODUCTION: The quest of diffusion-weighted (DW) imaging is to non-invasively obtain information about the average diffusion of water molecules in biological tissue. Many recent high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) [1, and references therein] techniques are proposed to infer the diffusion or fiber orientation distribution function (ODF), but this ODF only captures the angular str...

Remarks on q-space MR propagator in partially restricted, axially-symmetric, and isotropic environments.

The problem of reconstruction of an apparent propagator from a series of diffusion-attenuated magnetic resonance (MR) signals is revisited. In nonimaging acquisitions, the inverse Fourier transform of the MR signal attenuation is consistent with the notion of an ensemble average propagator. However, in image acquisitions where one is interested in quantifying a displacement distribution in ever...
